What Type of Pool Paint Do I Need?
Our expert team recommends two types of swimming pool paint for the best results:
Richard’s Paint® Pool Guard Waterborne Acrylic Swimming Pool Paint
Richard's Paint® PoolGuard Waterborne Acrylic Swimming Pool Paint creates a rich, colorful finish in five colors. You can use it on interior or exterior pools made from concrete, marcite, or gunite, but not on fiberglass, metal, vinyl, or vinyl-lined pools.
When you start with this pool paint, you can layer it over old paint, so the existing paint bonds with the new coat.

Hoover Paint’s Top Tips for Painting Pools
Here are a couple of our best tips when it comes to painting pools:
Tip #1: Application
Before starting, drain, dry, and clean the pool and etch the surface to increase its roughness for better paint adhesion. When you’re ready to paint the pool, use two coats. Allow it to dry overnight between coats. This technique ensures good coverage and a harder finish.
Thoroughly stir the pool paint before you get started. You can use a paintbrush, roller, or airless sprayer. If you use a paint sprayer, back-roll it immediately with a paint roller to evenly apply the coat and ensure it adheres properly to the surface.
Tip #2: Choose Your Preferred Color
Our selection of Richard's Paint® pool paint has five colors:
- Pearl white.
- Blue lagoon.
- Emerald sea.
- Sea blue.
- Black.
Color matters. Blue is the traditional color, but you might think another shade is more your style. Some find greenish colors bring a lake-like aesthetic to their pool. Others believe black can make the pool look too small, but they enjoy how fast the water can warm in the sun. As for a white shade, it can make your pool glow and shimmer in the sunlight.
